Rev. Phil Shulman

About Our Minister

UU Principals and Purposes have guided Phil Schulman in his work as a teacher, counselor, community organizer, and minister.  He has a passion for the integration of personal and social healing.

After graduating from Thomas Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, CA in 1989, Rev. Schulman began a Community Ministry.  He served the Mental Health Association in Essex Co., NY as Emergency Services Director, and started a Crisis Alternative Program there as a holistic alternative to hospitalization. He  led support groups, spirituality classes, and workshops at conferences throughout the U.S. and in cities in Canada and Europe.

In 2001, Phil began parish ministry, and has served the Lakeland UU Fellowship in NJ and the St. John UU Fellowship in the USVI. In 2004, he began serving CUUC, and has been "Visiting Minister" to several congregations in our district and beyond.

Phil is the founder of the 10TreeChallenge.   If you would like to ensure trees for future generations, please spread this challenge to your congregation!

Do you have an open mind and heart for matters of religion and spirituality?  Do you want to grow in self-acceptance and expand your faith?  Are you willing to make a committment to increase your skills and practice happiness and peacemaking?  Are you willing to take responsibility for your belief system?

We think you will find that our Minister (CUUC worship and adult classes) will challenge and support you in these regards.  Phil leads study/ practice groups in Nonviolent Communication. (see Center for Nonviolent Communication). Beyond the scope of congregational pastoral support, he supports and mentors clients interested in the goals mentioned above.   Phil also enjoys working with couples to plan weddings weddings that reflect and express their values.
